Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far. I’m over half way to my target of £1,000. Hopefully a big push in the last few weeks, and we can get there.

Less than 5 weeks until the Half Marathon now, and training is going well. I was fit and strong in last night’s session.

6 weeks to go

Only 6 weeks left to whip myself into shape to face the Royal Parks Half Marathon.

The preparation has not been ideal, with a 4 week trip to America (of all places) slap bang in the middle of my training schedule.

I got back from my holiday with 7 weeks until the race, and 6lb gained.

The first couple of sessions at the gym were tough, very tough, but my third session yesterday was an enormous improvement, and I have shed 4lb of those 6lb that I gained.

I managed to run more than a third of the distance, 7.5km, in 40m 36s, not a brilliant time, but given my previous two sessions (when I could barely manage 5km), I’m reasonably happy.

Hopefully the coming weeks will see me trim up again, and improve on those times and distances.

Following our family holiday to the Far East in the Easter of 2009, we gazed in awe and wonder at the spectacular landscapes, the boat rides, and the exciting cities of Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore.

When we returned home, we also enjoyed looking back at our holiday photos and videos, and all the wonderful memories came flooding back.

In my case, I also looked in horror at what a large percentage of real estate was taken up by myself in the family photos.

So I made the (long overdue) decision to try and get myself into shape, and reduce some of that real estate.

July 11th 2009, I started my diet, and August 17th I joined a gym. On December 2nd, my first target was reached, and I had lost 50lb in (less than) 5 months.

In January, I decided to solidify an idea that had been loosely knocking around inside my head for the past few months… I would aim to run a marathon in 2011.

I set myself the first goal:

1. I decided to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October 2010, and decided that should extra motivation be necessary, I would offer moral support for Penny by raising funds for the NRAS. I set up a fund raising page.

I’ve been building up the running. The stamina has improved, the times have improved, and now that the weather is improving (following quite a severe winter), I’m hoping to put in more time training outdoors, as opposed to just using the treadmill.

In order to acheive my goals, and get used to racing, I intend to join in with a few public runs in the coming months; which brings me to my second goal:

2. I have entered the Denbies 10, which is a 10 mile race in and around Denbies vineyard in Dorking. This will be my first competitive race. Obviously, I have no pretentions of coming anywhere other than towards the back… but you have to start somewhere.
