Following our family holiday to the Far East in the Easter of 2009, we gazed in awe and wonder at the spectacular landscapes, the boat rides, and the exciting cities of Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore.
When we returned home, we also enjoyed looking back at our holiday photos and videos, and all the wonderful memories came flooding back.
In my case, I also looked in horror at what a large percentage of real estate was taken up by myself in the family photos.
So I made the (long overdue) decision to try and get myself into shape, and reduce some of that real estate.
July 11th 2009, I started my diet, and August 17th I joined a gym. On December 2nd, my first target was reached, and I had lost 50lb in (less than) 5 months.
In January, I decided to solidify an idea that had been loosely knocking around inside my head for the past few months… I would aim to run a marathon in 2011.
I set myself the first goal:
1. I decided to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in October 2010, and decided that should extra motivation be necessary, I would offer moral support for Penny by raising funds for the NRAS. I set up a fund raising page.
I’ve been building up the running. The stamina has improved, the times have improved, and now that the weather is improving (following quite a severe winter), I’m hoping to put in more time training outdoors, as opposed to just using the treadmill.
In order to acheive my goals, and get used to racing, I intend to join in with a few public runs in the coming months; which brings me to my second goal:
2. I have entered the Denbies 10, which is a 10 mile race in and around Denbies vineyard in Dorking. This will be my first competitive race. Obviously, I have no pretentions of coming anywhere other than towards the back… but you have to start somewhere.
